Nintendo had always been more casual about their portable consoles, and Mario DS was no exception to that.

But that wasn’t the case with their big handheld system, the DS. As Nintendo’s portable system got bigger, the system became far more mainstream, and the once quirky system became a little more mainstream.
Nintendo DS Lite
The system started out with the Nintendo DS Lite, which was released in November of 2006. The system itself was rather small at 8.5 inches long, and had a single analog stick on the right side of the system.
The touch screen was simply a push button affair, and the first model had two memory card slots. The system didn’t support Game Boy Advance games, and those games weren’t re-released on the system until years later.

The system didn’t change too much with the Nintendo DS Lite, and the system was simply a minor upgrade over the original Nintendo DS. But that was the case with the Nintendo DS Lite and the Nintendo DSi XL as well, so what was different with the Nintendo DSi XL?
The Nintendo DSi XL looked fairly different from the Nintendo DS Lite, and it was released in late 2008. The system was an upgraded version of the Nintendo DS Lite, and offered a number of new and improved features.
Like the DS Lite, the Nintendo DSi XL had only a single analog stick on the right side of the system, but the system also had four face buttons to the right of the analog stick. This made the system’s set up much more similar to a traditional home console system, where you had the four face buttons.

In addition, the system now had the ability to download game updates via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, allowing players to download game updates and patches. Another new feature of the Nintendo DSi XL was a built-in microphone, making the system’s voice chat abilities a little more versatile.
This system marked the return of the Nintendo DS as the first proper “Super Mario” handheld gaming system in years. The system was made for those who didn’t want to lug around a bulky home console like the PlayStation Portable or the Nintendo Gamecube.
